Review

“Ivan marries a deep sense of logic and analysis to the wonder and worship of the Earth. There are practices and rituals plenty, and enough intellectual meat to satisfy anyone who is willing to chew it thoroughly for its savor and nourishment.”
-Peter Coyote, author, Zen Teacher, actor

What You Will Learn

We are living through an ethics crisis—a quiet but devastating unraveling of our shared moral compass.
– Philosophy gives us more questions than answers.
– Organized religion has lost credibility with many.
– Culture wars replace compassion with condemnation.
– And modern life, full of noise and opinion, leaves us confused about what “good” even means.
People are longing for guidance—not rules, not dogma—but real tools to live more ethically, compassionately, and wisely.
But where do we turn when reason isn’t enough, faith feels distant, and empathy gets weaponized?

The Religion of Good Offers a Solution

This book proposes a new approach to ethics—one rooted in spiritual practice, ritual design, and a deep, personal relationship with the ineffable mystery of goodness.
It doesn’t ask you to believe in anything.
Whether you’re religious, spiritual-but-not-religious, or completely secular, The Religion of Good will help you build a moral foundation not based on fear or ideology—but on awe, community, and wisdom.

How The Religion of Good Solves the Ethics Crisis

The Religion of Good doesn’t offer commandments or creeds—it offers a practice-based framework for cultivating goodness in a confusing world. Instead of relying on failing systems (organized religion, partisan ideology, shallow empathy, or cold logic), this book gives readers spiritual tools to engage with ethical living in a personal, transformative way.
Readers come away with:
– A clearer sense of what kind of person they want to be
– A way to orient themselves morally without needing external approval
– And a toolkit for navigating today’s moral chaos with compassion, nuance, and inner strength

About the Author

Ivan Richmond is a Wiccan priest and spiritual leader.  He is the author of two books, to date.  Having been raised Zen Buddhist at Green Gulch, a branch of San Francisco Zen Center, he wrote his first book, Silence and Noise, on his childhood there.  His father, Lew Richmond, is a Zen Buddhist priest and a disciple of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.  Ivan also has a BA in Greco-Roman Studies from Reed in Portland, Oregon, which gave him a deep appreciation for ancient Greek philosophy and religion.

In 2001, he became interested in Wicca and Neopaganism, and became a Wiccan priest in 2005.  He is currently a 3rd degree in two Wiccan traditions: Gardnerian and Waxing Moon, and is the high priest of Waxing Moon Coven and Temple of Inanna and Dumuzi, as well as holding clergy credentials in the New Wiccan Church.  He is a long time presenter at Pagan conventions and festivals.

His second book, The Religion of Good, focuses on how we can figure out our ethics for ourselves, through spiritual practices that help us connect with the oneness of all of us together.
